Maestro Anzolini recently returned to work as a conductor after a severe paralysis of the left hand, wrist, and arm when he was stabbed by a stranger in a random unprovoked attack in September 2023 near his home in New York State. His left radial nerve was completely severed, necessitating emergency surgery. Through this unexpected full stop he has remained resilient; determined to return to full function, he is continuing physical therapy while resuming his career.

His most recent engagements included his debut with the Baltimore Symphony in the Strathmore Hall in September 2025, and his return to Carnegie Hall conducting the Orchestra of St Luke’s in February 2025. Both concerts were part of a Concert Tribute series to Mother Teresa of Calcutta. He conducted at the inauguration of the new hall of the Klaipeda State Music Theater, in Lithuania: “The Voyage” by Philip Glass was performed on October 4th, 2024. He also directed a series of concerts with the Orchestra of São Pablo, Brazil in May, 2024.

In 2008, Mo. Anzolini made his Metropolitan Opera debut with Philip Glass’s Satyagraha. The composer considered it his biggest success in New York after the premiere of Einstein in the Beach in 1976. He returned to the Metropolitan in 2011, also with Satyagraha. In 2015 he first appeared at the Washington National Opera with Glass’s “Appomattox” to great public acclaim. He has had a long and successful collaboration with Glass, having also conducted his “Akhnaten”, “The White Raven” and his 5th Symphony “Requiem, Bardo and Nirmanakaya”. Maestro Anzolini’s extensive work in opera includes several productions of Verdi, Puccini, Mascagni, Leoncavallo, Mozart, Poulenc among other composers. He has recently directed productions of “La Traviata” and “La Bohème” where he worked as coach, choir leader, stage director, and general director/conductor.

Mo. Anzolini has held conducting positions in Bern, Guayaquil, and Linz. While at the helm of the Guayaquil Symphony, he presented circa 40 full weekly symphonic programs per season, plus opera, ballet, film music, and educational programs. There, he created the “Inter-Religious Music Festival” to unite musical repertoire of different creeds in a concert series. He also founded the “Music for the Planet Festival” in the Galápagos Islands, using music of all styles to highlight environmental causes. Also in Ecuador, he conducted the world premieres of four symphonies of Luis Humberto Salgado, and numerous local premieres of works by Mahler, Ravel, Stravinsky, Bartok, Debussy, Busoni, and Berio.

Mo. Anzolini had a long career as a performing musician, starting as piano and harpsichord soloist, before branching out into conducting. He conducted concerts, operas and ballets in 23 countries of Europe, the United States, South Africa, and South America, taking in many European capitals (including Milano, Vienna, Brussels), South American capitals (Montevideo, Buenos Aires, São Pablo), and major cities in the US (Boston, Washington DC, and of course New York). He made his debut at Carnegie Hall in 2001, leading the American Composers Orchestra, offering two world premieres by Tania León and Jin Hi Kim, and Schoenberg’s Variations for Orchestra. He debuted at the Musikverein in Vienna conducting the Vienna Symphony and the Orfeón Donostiarra Choir of the Basque Country, Spain.

Dante Santiago Anzolini started improvising and composing at age 11, pursuing studies in composition and arranging under G.Gandini. His main classical influences have been JS Bach, Brahms, Mahler, Ravel, Bartok, Stravinsky, and Schoenberg – but he is also inspired by rock music, pop music, folk- and world-music from various cultures. In February 2026, Universal Edition will release his piano transcription of Schoenberg’s Verklaerte Nacht. His “Faust” Symphony for two choirs, two sopranos, tenor, dancers and orchestra, based on texts by Goethe, Leopardi, Mistral, and the Greek “Epitaph of Seikilos”, received great accolades in Guayaquil, Ecuador. His piano version of the Variations op. 31 by Arnold Schoenberg, has been published by Belmont and distributed worldwide by Universal Edition, and was premiered in Tokyo in 2015 by Hiroaki Ooi. He has orchestrated a two-piano manuscript of Helen Hagan (1891-1964, the first Black woman admitted to the Yale School of Music), reconstructing her Piano Concerto in C.

He has composed numerous pieces for the keyboard, including the “Quaderno per Daniel”, a collection of pieces dedicated to the study of transposition. In 2023, out of his great affection for the Dixwell Congregational Church where he was music director for some time, he wrote the Dixwell Cantata, a work based upon African American traditional poetry. He is currently working on a set of 24 impromptus, and a collection of virtuosic etudes for piano. His production includes chamber music and solo pieces for violin, viola, violoncello, and other instruments. He is presently working on his second symphony, his first violin concerto, a piano concerto, and finalizing his “Paradiso Variations” for piano.

Mo. Anzolini has collaborated with artists of the stature of Leon Fleisher, Richard Croft, Robert Levin, Michael Kofler, Frank Morelli, David Shifrin, Miriam Makeba, Erick Friedman, amongst many others. He has worked with and conducted music by composers Philip Glass, John Harbison, Terry Riley, Osvaldo Golijov, Jacob Druckman, Oliver Knussen, Missy Mazzoli, Wim Mertens, to name only a few. He has also worked with many stage directors, as Robert Wilson, Werner Herzog, Gian-Carlo Del Monaco, Phelim McDermott, and Tazewell Thompson.

As an educator, Mo. Anzolini was an Associate Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he took the Symphony Orchestra to the first two European Tours in its history. Under his leadership, the MIT Symphony Orchestra gave exemplary performances of Mahler, Stravinsky, Ravel, Bartok, Charles Ives and Schoenberg. The orchestra was critically acclaimed by various music critics in Boston newspapers during his time as its Music Director. He was the Head of the Orchestra Department for the New England Conservatory, and gave master-classes in several countries. He was invited to lead the Youth Orchestra of the Americas in two tours to Latin America. He was a juror at the Besançon Conducting Competition in 2015, and has been named adjudicator for the Around the Globe Piano Composition Competition in 2024 and 2025.

He is the leader and creator of the Foundation “Music for the Planet”, an educational enterprise that brings together music performance, humanities, mathematics and environmental sciences. The project is in its initial stages.

Dante Santiago Anzolini studied orchestral conducting firstly with Mariano Drago Sijanec, then under Mo. Eleazar de Carvalho at Yale University, from which he graduated with top honors. He received the only award given to a young conductor at the Tanglewood Summer Festival in 1992.

Before beginning his conducting studies, Mo. Anzolini worked as a piano accompanist, chorus leader, arranger, harpsichordist and piano instructor. He studied violin, viola, oboe, percussion, and read mathematics at the La Plata University. He cultivated his passions for world literature, poetry, world history, Jungian psychology, alternative medicine and languages. He is the son of Lorenzo Dante Anzolini and Lucila Wawzyniak, of Italian (Friuli-Venezia Giulia) and Chilean (Punta Arenas) lineage respectively.
